As we all know, our shop is staffed by hardworking volunteers. The rotas are managed by spreadsheets and WhatsApp messaging, which is proving to be a cumbersome, time consuming system.
One of the hardest roles in a voluntary organisation is that of organising volunteer rotas.
To this end, because our shop is open 80 hours per week, we have now engaged the services of a consultant to set up a new secure, flexible, online volunteer management system called 3Rings.
The system will make it much easier for volunteers to select available shifts, make amendments and to plan ahead. It’s simple to use and works on everything from desktops to laptops, tablets and smartphones – with nothing to install.
Those who are not familiar with technology will be able to inform us of their availability either by phone or by calling into the shop.
At the end of the consultation period, a salaried role of volunteer coordinator, with some admin duties, will be advertised on a permanent basis. This should make it much easier for all of us and provide a more streamlined operation.
Why you should Volunteer…
People choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons. For some it offers the chance to give something back to the community or make a difference to
the people around them. For others it provides an opportunity to develop new skills or build on existing experience and knowledge.
“Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote everyday about the kind of community you want to live in.”
The more we give, the happier we feel.
Volunteering increases self-confidence, beats isolation and loneliness. You are doing good for others and the community, which provides a natural sense of accomplishment. Your role as a volunteer can also give you a sense of pride and identity.
